Balance Conditioning and
Screening Program
Balance is controlled by a complex interaction of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The muscular, vestibular, neurological, and visual systems must work in conjunction to provide for stability. Many factors, including pain and normal age related changes like arthritis, could adversely affect balance. When feedback from the lower extremities to the postural control system is interrupted, it becomes difficult to maintain a sense of stability, especially under more challenging conditions.
Before The Fall
Before a dangerous fall occurs, participate in Keystone Orthopedic Physical Therapy's Balance Conditioning and Screening Program. Our program is consistent with the guidelines set forth by the American Geriatric Society regarding decreasing fall risk. Maintain a regular exercise program and take steps to address factors known to increase fall risk.
Goals of the Program
- Identify factors that put one at risk for falling
- Decrease risk factors
- Improve balance and mobility
- Enhance movement quality
- Maintain independence
- Optimize function at home, work, or with hobbies
What To Expect
- A structured program consisting of an initial evaluation and, as required, 8-12 visits over a four week period
- Evaluation for specific risk factors known to contribute to decreased balance and mobility
- Use of the Biodex balance system as a screening and training tool
- Clinical exercises to address specific neuromuscular deficiencies
- Instruction in home exercise to improve strength, ROM, balance, flexibility, and to support functional gains
- Education regarding risk factors related to impaired balance and falling
- A report summarizing the effect of the program
Who Can Benefit
- Any individual with a history of falling, who reports feeling dizzy or unsteady, or is having increased difficulty with walking
- Athletes looking for a competitive edge or those whose recreational activities include an element of balance (golfing)
- Those recovering from strains or sprains, fractures, total joint replacements
- Those with spinal or lower extremity pain
- Individuals with a past history of injury to the joints, muscles, nerves, or other body system that may affect balance
